Administrating the last few weeks of the year can be a challenge for experienced and beginning administrators. The need to remain engaged and connected to the learning is essential for finishing the school year with positive and productive outcomes. Administrators should conduct routine walkthroughs focused on evidence of achievement gaps being closed and ensuring that instruction continues to be rigorous. Leaders must look for student samples across all content areas that reflect gains in both knowledge and understanding of new learning. Keeping in mind that all instruction remains on pace with building goals, curriculum focus, and students’ needs.
In order to maintain a significant high level of focus on building needs and connecting with both teachers, students, and parents; administrators must consider the following:
Reviewing of teacher and student data
Participating in collaborative meetings (Professional Learning Communities)
Connecting with parents on student progress and needs
Engaging in conversation with all staff concerning goals and expectations
Providing support and resources that reflects the building vision and mission
Ensure daily instruction is rigorous, on grade level, and being mastered by students
Effective leadership is more than scheduling those last minute observations or closing out your final expenditures. It involves staying connected and engaged with the daily instruction to ensure teachers and students recognize your energy and focus on learning until the closing of the school year. Now is the time when transformative leaders remain present in all aspects of the building, whether it is mentoring a student or staff member; reassuring parents of student progress; or managing the day to day events. These moments will challenge your energy level and focus; however, administrators must strive to keep learning first and kids' dreams alive.
