Discipline and mentorship are two different approaches to addressing behavior in an educational setting. Both approaches are generally used to address a negative or undesirable behavior and is focused on correcting that behavior. Discipline often involves consequences or punishments to deter the student from repeating the negative behavior. Mentorship, on the other hand, is more focused on helping students develop and grow. It involves providing guidance, support, and resources to help students learn and succeed.
It's important to consider both discipline and mentorship when working with students. The appropriate approach will depend on the specific situation and the needs of the individual student. In some cases, a combination of both approaches may be necessary.
For example, if a student struggles to stay in his or her math class this would be an opportunity for mentoring versus discipline. As a mentor, you would provide additional resources to help the student improve their math skills and gain confidence in their ability to work within the math environment. It is necessary that while addressing the behavior, the mentor set boundaries and expectations for the student's behavior in order to create a positive and productive learning mindset for the student.
When deciding whether to discipline or mentor a student, it is important to consider the nature of the issue, the age, and developmental level of the student. It is also important to recognize that students with special needs may have unique challenges. Students with special needs may require a different approach to discipline than their non-disabled peers.
Ultimately, when considering when to discipline versus when to mentor will depend on the specific situation and the needs of the individual student. It may be helpful to problem-solve using a collaborative school consultation plan which involves working with other educators, counselors or mental health providers, and/or parents to determine the most appropriate course of action.
